Sri Lanka best sesame oil traditional pressing tour - cold press seed?
3 Answers from travellers
Traditional cold-pressed oil making: (1) Some village 'chekku' oil mills (cattle-driven traditional wooden press) still operating - Matara + Kandy regions. (2) Handunugoda Estate combines oil pressing with tea + spice tours. (3) Ceylon Ayurveda Pavillons Wadduwa has demonstration mill. (4) Some Ayurvedic centers demonstrate traditional oil pressing (Bandaranaike Institute). (5) Small commercial producers (Ceylon Traditional Oils, Sacred Ayurvedic Oils) sometimes allow workshop visits. Chekku method: cold-crushing seeds with wooden pestle turned by ox for hours. Truly cold-pressed (max 40C) preserves nutrients + flavor. Modern extraction can't replicate.
Just booked Handunugoda combined tour for the sesame oil + tea + cinnamon experience. Also getting Sacred Ayurvedic Oils shipment sent home. Loving Sri Lanka's preservation of traditional methods.
Traditional sesame oil different flavor - deep nutty, aromatic. Used in Ayurvedic massage + cooking. Modern industrial versions (majority of supermarket) not comparable to chekku-pressed. Cost: chekku sesame oil USD 15-30 per 500ml (vs $5 industrial). Worth premium for enthusiasts.
