Elephant calves are visible year-round in Sri Lanka since herds don't have a strict birthing season, but seasonal concentrations vary. (1) Uda Walawe National Park - baby elephants visible year-round; herds have new calves rotating in constantly. Elephant Transit Home (ETH) beside Uda Walawe has literal orphaned baby elephants at daily feedings (9am, 12pm, 3pm, 6pm) - unforgettable for kids. (2) Minneriya / Kaudulla 'Great Gathering' (July-October) - up to 300 elephants gather at receding reservoirs. Many babies visible in family units. Peak: August-September. (3) Yala Block 5, Wilpattu, Kumana - resident herds with periodic new births. For guaranteed baby elephants + kids-friendly setup: Uda Walawe National Park + Elephant Transit Home combined day is the answer. Go any time of year.

Also: Kaudulla safari (adjacent to Minneriya) sometimes has better sightings than Minneriya during the Great Gathering - park rangers know which reservoir has water on a given week and jeeps go there. Ask your operator to check same-day conditions, not just book Minneriya on default.

ETH is the emotional highlight - orphaned baby elephants rescued from wells, wire snares, human-elephant conflict, then rehabilitated for eventual release. Kids watch them drink milk from oversized bottles held by mahouts. Public feeding is behind a low wall - kids get a real close view without any invasion of the animals' welfare. USD 3-5 entry.
