Sri Lanka best traditional dance performance venue - Kandyan authentic?
3 Answers from travellers
Traditional dance performance venues: (1) Kandyan Cultural Centre (Kandy - 7pm nightly, LKR 1500-2500, tourist-friendly compressed show, well-produced). (2) Y.M.B.A. Cultural Centre (Kandy - alternative traditional show). (3) Kandy Lake Club Cultural Show (dinner + show combo, hotel-oriented). (4) Chitrasena Kalayathanaya (Colombo - training institute, occasional public performances, more serious). (5) Nelum Pokuna Mahinda Rajapaksa Theatre (Colombo - occasional large productions, authentic). For traditional Kandyan dance in its home + tourist accessibility: Kandy Cultural Centre 7pm is the standard experience. About 1 hour, covers ves dance, mask dance, drums, fire dance, coconut fire finale.
For serious dance enthusiasts: Chitrasena Kalayathanaya (school founded 1944) sometimes has public showings of classical Kandyan traditional dance - more depth, longer performances. Check schedules. Regular tourist cultural show captures the spirit but is 1-hour highlights format.
