Sri Lanka travel insurance claims 2026: (1) Contact insurance emergency number IMMEDIATELY when medical event occurs (many claims voided without prompt notification). (2) Save receipts + medical records + police reports (if applicable). (3) Photograph everything relevant (damage, injury, receipts). (4) Follow insurance's local clinic/hospital directive if possible (in-network vs out-of-network). (5) Pay cash/card upfront at Sri Lankan hospital, then reimbursement claim. (6) Submit claim within insurance company's deadline (7-30 days typical). (7) Full documentation chain required. Common travel insurance: World Nomads, IMG Global, SafetyWing, Allianz.

Sri Lankan hospitals + insurance: (1) Nawaloka, Asiri Central, Lanka Hospitals - major private hospitals. All accept insurance reimbursement claims (patient pays upfront, submits claim). Some pre-approval for major treatments possible. (2) Government hospitals: emergency stabilization free/low cost, but private hospitals recommended for foreigners.

Question: is it typical for Sri Lankan private hospitals to accept insurance direct billing for major medical events? Trying to plan whether I need to have emergency cash available or insurance covers upfront. Big peace of mind difference.

For non-medical claims (lost baggage, etc.): file with airline first (get file number), then insurance secondary. Photograph everything. Written statement from airline. Time-sensitive - file within 24-48 hours of event typically. Insurance claim within their deadline.

Documentation to bring for hospital: (1) Passport + copy. (2) Insurance card + policy number. (3) Credit card for upfront payment. (4) List of allergies + medications. (5) Home doctor's contact for reference. (6) Emergency contact information. Hospital administration handles rest but you need documentation.

For motorbike specifically: MOST travel insurances DENY motorbike-related claims without proper motorcycle license + insurance-specific rider. Check policy BEFORE renting. Motorbike accidents #1 claim reason + also #1 rejection reason for missed license requirements.

Common claim types: (1) Medical (largest category - injuries, illness, dental). (2) Trip cancellation. (3) Baggage loss/damage. (4) Flight delays > 6 hours. (5) Motorbike accidents (specific rider needed). Rejection reasons: alcohol involvement, pre-existing conditions, not following T&Cs, missed deadlines, insufficient documentation.
