VPN in Sri Lanka 2026: (1) Not required for typical tourist internet use - most sites accessible. (2) Recommended if: accessing home country streaming (Netflix regional catalog), banking (some banks flag foreign IP), work-related privacy, journalists/researchers. (3) Occasional temporary blocks: some Facebook + Instagram issues during political events, some encrypted messaging apps briefly restricted historically. Top VPN choices: NordVPN, ExpressVPN, Surfshark - all work in Sri Lanka. USD 3-12/month. Set up before flying (some VPN download blocked once in-country during restrictions).

Getting NordVPN subscribed before I fly + downloading app + setting up. Better safe than sorry. Also for streaming home content during 6-month expat stay. Confirmed works reliably in Sri Lanka via multiple expat forum reviews.

For expats: streaming access to home content (US Netflix, BBC iPlayer, etc.) main use. Banking security also important. Free VPNs less reliable + slower - paid services worth USD 3-8/month subscription. Sri Lankan ISPs (Dialog + SLT-Mobitel) don't specifically block VPNs typically.
