Sri Lanka best walking Fort Colombo route - self-guided or hire?

Fort Colombo self-guided route: (1) Start Grand Oriental Hotel (1875) - Colombo's oldest hotel, walk around. (2) Old Colombo Fort area - Cargills Building, Chartered Bank building. (3) Old Dutch Hospital precinct (now shopping-dining). (4) Independence Memorial Hall area (short drive). (5) President's House (external view). (6) Colombo Lighthouse. (7) Old Colombo Fort Railway Station (architecturally significant). Total walk 3-4 hours at leisurely pace. Best time: 7-11am (before heat, buildings/streets photograph best). Bring water + sun hat. Guided walk USD 25-45 adds context + stories.
Doing 7am self-guided with Colombo City Walks map, then continuing to Pettah for lunch. This route is ideal - not too rushed but hits all the essentials. Camera charged, water bottled, ready.
Also: extend to Pettah area for street market experience (chaotic, colorful, real Sri Lanka - not for those wanting only architecture but genuine cultural experience). Combined Fort + Pettah = fuller Colombo day.
Colombo City Walks operate scheduled Fort walks 7am-10am - includes context you'd miss self-guided (history of buildings, local anecdotes). USD 30-45 per person. Book direct. For deep architecture appreciation: guided better. For general exploration: self-guided fine with good map (they have free Fort walking map at hotel receptions).
