Sri Lanka humidity levels - what to expect by region?
3 Answers from travellers
Region-by-region humidity: (1) Coasts (Colombo, Galle, Mirissa, Trincomalee) - 75-85% year-round, oppressive at noon. (2) Cultural triangle (Sigiriya, Dambulla, Anuradhapura) - drier, 65-75%, hotter but less sticky. (3) Hill country (Ella, Nuwara Eliya, Haputale) - low humidity (55-70%), cool. (4) Jaffna and north - drier than south, seasonal shifts. For heat-sensitive travelers: hill country base + short coastal visits. Nuwara Eliya can require a jacket at night. Ella is temperate + comfortable.
Practical: coastal humidity feels worse in monsoon months (May-Sept south, Oct-Jan east). Sweat management: cotton/linen clothing, hydrate constantly (2-3L/day), skip midday activities in the heat, siesta culture is smart. Air-conditioning is your friend at hotels.
