Sri Lanka in July monsoon - can I still travel and enjoy it?

July is southwest monsoon peak - south and west coasts (Colombo, Galle, Mirissa) rainy afternoons, choppy sea, some beaches close for swimming. HOWEVER: east coast (Trincomalee, Passikudah, Arugam Bay) is DRY and gorgeous. Cultural triangle (Sigiriya, Dambulla) usually manageable. Hill country variable. July strategy: focus east coast (5-6 nights beach), cultural triangle (3-4 nights), skip south coast. Prices 40-60% below peak. Perfectly good trip if you plan right.
Also: Arugam Bay is peak surf season July-Sept - if you surf, this is the reason to come in July. World-class waves, empty beaches (relative to peak season).
