Sri Lanka intercity bus experience - is AC coach worth the upgrade?
3 Answers from travellers
AC 'intercity express' (Superline, SLTB Highway) is night-and-day different from regular local buses. AC coach: 1500-3500 LKR for Colombo-Kandy, Colombo-Galle routes, reclining seats, assigned seats, direct routes, 3-4 hours. Regular local bus: 200-500 LKR same route, 6-8 hours, stops constantly, standing room only common, chaotic. For any journey over 2 hours: AC coach worth it. For sub-2 hour hops: local bus fine and cheap. Book AC bus at main Bastian Mawatha terminal Colombo or online via Busmoni app.
AC coach is the sweet spot for backpackers wanting budget without misery. 4-5x price of local bus but half the time, seat guaranteed, safer for luggage. Overnight AC buses (Colombo-Jaffna) save a hotel night. Book 1 day ahead in peak season.
