Sri Lanka Perahera elephant welfare - is it ethical to attend?

Complicated question. The Kandy Esala Perahera uses 60-80 elephants, mostly from temple stables or private owners. Concerns raised by animal welfare organizations: long night processions, fireworks, decorations that can cause stress. Improvements over last decade: veterinary oversight increased, ceremonial durations somewhat reduced, some retiring of older elephants. Attending doesn't directly harm elephants but does support the tradition. Legitimate ethical debate. Personal choice - some visitors attend and donate to elephant welfare orgs (Elephant Transit Home) to offset.
Alternative: attend a smaller Perahera (Bellanwila, Kataragama) with fewer elephants and shorter procession. Or watch Kandy Perahera briefly for cultural experience but don't sit through the full 4-hour night parade. Different people draw the line differently.
