Hospitality perspective, honest breakdown. TOURIST HOTELS AND GUESTHOUSES (any level from backpacker up in tourist zones): Western sit-down toilets are now nearly universal. Even 2000-3000 LKR/night guesthouses in Ella, Mirissa, Sigiriya etc. have Western toilets. RESTAURANTS ON TOURIST TRAILS: usually Western. RURAL VILLAGES and OLD LOCAL RESTAURANTS: mixed - Western toilet is common but squat still exists, often you have both options. BUS AND TRAIN STATIONS: variable. Big ones (Colombo Fort, Kandy, Galle) have paid public toilets (Rs 20-50) that are reasonably clean; smaller rural stops can be rough. INTERCITY BUS STOPS: quality varies wildly. PETROL STATIONS: often have decent toilets, sometimes free with a purchase. Public toilets in tourist attractions (Sigiriya, Polonnaruwa, Anuradhapura) exist but expect basic cleanliness. Malls (Colombo City Centre, One Galle Face) have excellent free clean toilets.

CARRY: pocket tissue pack (always), a small hand sanitizer, a few 20/50 rupee coins for paid toilets, and a small ziplock in case tissue disposal is not obvious. Many Sri Lankan toilets have a bidet-style HAND SPRAY next to the toilet (called locally a "bum gun") - it is genuinely excellent once you try it and used with the same paper backup you would use anywhere. Do NOT flush anything except paper - even in modern hotels, plumbing is narrow and blockages are common; bins beside the toilet are for wipes/pads.
