Observation Saloon: air-conditioned, tinted windows (bad for photos, don't open), rear-facing seats with panoramic back window, reserved. Comfort premium but photo compromise. 2nd class reserved: windows open, hangout culture (people lean out, take photos), more social, less comfort. For photo enthusiasts and Instagrammers: 2nd class reserved wins. For comfort/AC seekers: Observation. Cost difference is small (~USD 20-30) - the experience is different not necessarily better.

Middle ground: 1st class reserved (non-Observation) - AC, opening windows sometimes, upgraded seats. Available on some services. Also worth: sit on the RIGHT side going Kandy to Ella for best hill country views.
