The Sri Lanka Whistling Thrush (Myophonus blighi) is crepuscular, emerging almost exclusively during the dim 30 minutes before sunrise (5:45 AM to 6:15 AM) and briefly after dusk along dark, heavily shaded stream cascades. Arrenga Pool and the small culverts on the road from Pattipola to the main park gate are primary territories. Look for them foraging along wet boulders in overcast, misty, or drizzling conditions; clear sunny mornings drive them into thick bamboo cover immediately.
Do not use playback call recordings; park rangers strictly enforce bans on digital acoustic lures, which cause territorial distress to this endangered bird.
Temperatures at dawn can drop to 3-5°C; wear windproof insulated outer layers while remaining motionless at the stream observation points.
