Sri Lanka Wise transfer rates - actually better than bank exchange?
3 Answers from travellers
Wise (formerly TransferWise) rates for USD/EUR/GBP to LKR are significantly better than local bank exchange (typically 2-4% closer to mid-market rate). Practical use: Wise transfer to a Sri Lankan bank account or Wise debit card ATM withdrawal. For tourists without local bank account: Wise debit card works at Sri Lankan ATMs (Commercial Bank, Sampath Bank ATMs recommended - lowest fees). ATM withdrawal fees: 400-1000 LKR + Wise's small conversion fee. Still cheaper than money changers or bank exchange counters.
Practical strategy: bring some USD cash for immediate needs + backup + best rates at Colombo Fort money changers, use Wise card for ongoing ATM withdrawals as needed. Notify your home bank of Sri Lanka travel to prevent card blocks. Also: Revolut works similarly to Wise for European travelers.
