Sri Lanka Yala closure dates 2026 - when is the park closed?
3 Answers from travellers
Yala Block 1 (main tourist section) traditionally closes Sept 1 - Oct 15 for drought period + wildlife recovery. Exact dates announced yearly by Wildlife Department. For 2026: check Yala National Park website or Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority news. October re-opening usually mid-October. If your Oct dates overlap with closure: Wilpattu remains open year-round, Bundala open, Uda Walawe open, Kumana open. Easy pivot. Never book non-refundable safari before confirming park status.
Alternative during Yala closure: Wilpattu (better leopard experience anyway), Uda Walawe (elephant paradise), Bundala (birds), Wasgamuwa (elephants + less-visited). Sri Lanka wildlife tourism doesn't stop just because Yala Block 1 closes. Your operator will pivot.
