Yapahuwa (13th century, brief royal capital) - dramatic ornamental staircase carved into cliff face, 90m rock summit, way steeper than Sigiriya's manageable climb. Smaller in scale but architecturally unique. Sigiriya (5th century, dramatic longer history) - larger, more famous, longer climb but with concrete steps + railings. Yapahuwa has zero crowds and same ancient magic. For history/architecture nerds: do both. For one-only: Sigiriya. For 'off-beaten-path bragging rights': Yapahuwa. 1.5 hours from Anuradhapura, doable as add-on.
Yapahuwa is dramatically underrated. The stone lion at the summit staircase is unique in Sri Lanka. Entry fee much lower than Sigiriya. Half-day visit. Combine with Anuradhapura or Kurunegala.
