The Sri Lankan Sloth Bear (Melursus ursinus inornatus / Walaha) possesses extreme morphological specializations for myrmecophagy (eating ants and termites). Using massive, 8cm ivory-white curved claws, bears excavate rock-hard subterranean termite mounds (Odontotermes) in minutes. The bear inserts its long muzzle into the breach. It lacks middle upper incisors, creating a natural gap in the front dental arcade. It can close its nostrils voluntarily and protrude its flexible, rubbery lips into a funnel. By inhaling forcefully, the bear creates a powerful biological vacuum pump; the loud roaring suction noise can be heard over 200 meters away as it hoovers thousands of termites into its mouth.
