St. Clair’s Falls (known as the "Little Niagara of Sri Lanka") is one of the widest waterfalls in the country, cascading 80 meters down three rock tiers along the Kotmale Oya river through manicured tea plantations. The premier viewing platform is situated directly along the A7 highway near Talawakelle, with tea estate cafes providing veranda terrace lookouts. Following the construction of the Upper Kotmale Hydroelectric Dam upstream, river flow was diverted through mountain tunnels; however, environmental flow regulations enforce continuous baseline water releases over the falls to sustain visual beauty and riverine ecology.
Water volume peaks during the Southwest Monsoon (June to September) when overflow spillways run full, creating a thundering white-water cascade.
The surrounding slopes belong to St. Clair Tea Estate; walking through the tea terraces to the base of the falls requires permission from estate management.
Combine the stop with nearby Devon Falls (located 3km west along the same road) for a classic double-waterfall hill country road trip.
