St Marys Church in Bambalapitiya is absolutely stunning and deeply historically significant. It was built in the early 20th century and serves as one of the most important Catholic parishes in the heart of Colombo.
The interior architecture is magnificent, featuring massive, sweeping arches, incredibly detailed stained glass windows imported from Europe, and a beautifully peaceful, quiet atmosphere completely isolated from the busy Galle Road traffic outside.
It is absolutely worth a quick detour to sit inside silently for a few minutes. Just remember to dress modestly, ensuring your shoulders and knees are covered, as it is an active place of worship.
