Yoga teacher who trains so the staying fit picture Gyms YES the cities and bigger towns (Colombo Kandy Galle the larger centres) have gyms from basic local iron gyms to modern well equipped fitness centres and chains in Colombo many accept DROP IN day or weekly passes just ask (some want a small fee per visit or a short term membership) the better HOTELS and resorts have gyms (quality varies from a couple of machines to a proper setup ask when booking if it matters) so in urban areas keeping up your lifting is realistic in remote beach or hill spots gyms are scarcer so plan bodyweight workouts there Running realistic but BEAT THE HEAT yes people run here but you MUST time it for the cool hours EARLY morning (dawn to early morning) or evening after the sun drops never the midday heat hydrate well WHERE the beach (firm sand at low tide is great and cooler with the sea breeze) the quieter roads and lanes (watch traffic and dogs) parks and the lakeside and promenade spots in towns (the Galle Face green and the lakeside paths) the COOL HILL COUNTRY (Nuwara Eliya Ella Kandy) is a joy to run far more comfortable than the humid lowlands run upcountry and it barely feels tropical Heat strategy the climate is the main obstacle so train early or late hydrate with electrolytes (the local king coconut thambili is brilliant natural rehydration) and use the cooler hill country for harder sessions Yoga and outdoor fitness BIG scene yoga is everywhere (studios beach classes retreats the yoga threads) outdoor and functional fitness beach workouts and the hiking and watersports double as training so you can stay fit actively a beach run then a swim then a yoga class is a perfect tropical training day so to stay in shape use the city and hotel gyms (drop in passes exist) run early morning or evening on the beach or quieter roads or best in the cool hills hydrate hard and lean on the rich yoga and outdoor scene train around the heat not against it and you keep your fitness easily
