Stray cat just walked through the open beach-cafe kitchen — hygiene panic or normal here?
Unawatuna, open-air kitchen, cook did not flinch. Cat hopped along the prep ledge then out again. Partner wants to leave; food smelled great and locals are eating. Not asking for a health-code lecture — just whether travelers usually stay when a stray tours the kitchen, or if that is a hard walk-out.

Open kitchens on the south coast often share space with village cats. It looks alarming if you are used to sealed western kitchens, but a cat crossing a ledge is not automatically a food-poisoning verdict. Watch whether food sits covered, whether the cook washes hands after shooing animals, and whether the place is busy with locals. If the cat is walking across cutting boards with raw fish, leave. If it passed through and the cook cleaned the spot, many travelers still eat. I will not invent inspection grades. Use your nose and the crowd, not one cat selfie.
Left once when a cat sat on the chopping board. Stayed another time when it only crossed the doorway. Crowded local tables are my tie-breaker.
Cook wiped the ledge and kept going. We ordered rice and curry, skipped the salad. Updating for the next nervous table.
Busy stalls with covered curries beat empty tourist cafes with Instagram cats. Crowd and cover matter more than one stray.
