Strict vegan for three days in Polonnaruwa town — hoppers with egg only, or can rice-and-curry places cook without dairy?

Staying near the archaeological sites, not in a Colombo cafe bubble. Partner reads every label. String hoppers often come with egg; curries sometimes have ghee or curd on the side. Can we eat well as strict vegans here with clear Sinhala/English requests, or should we self-cater fruit and bread?

You can eat well if you ask clearly: vegetable curry without ghee, dal without yogurt finish, rice, roti without butter, plain string hoppers without the egg hopper, fruit, and tea without milk. Say no egg, no milk, no curd, no ghee — smile, point, repeat. Many rice-and-curry places already cook vegetable pots separate from fish; the risk is the condiment tray. Tourist cafes are easier; town places are fine with patience. I will not invent a restaurant ranking. Carry snacks for long site mornings, and accept that fancy vegan cheese is not the local mission.

Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa both worked for us with the same script. Polite, specific, grateful.

Dal, pumpkin curry, plain hoppers, bananas. Partner relaxed. Egg hoppers politely declined.

Ask mild and vegan in the same sentence if your stomach is shy. They hear both requests all the time near sites.
