Planning to photograph the contrast of the red soil and blue ocean at Ussangoda National Park. Is there truth to the local wellness myths about the magnetic soil healing joint pain.

Ussangoda is a geographical anomaly. The soil is rich in laterite and iron, which gives it that striking Martian red color against the Indian Ocean, perfect for sunset photography. According to local Ramayana legends, it was scorched by Hanuman. While locals believe walking barefoot on the soil has grounding magnetic healing properties, scientifically, it is the high iron content that stunts plant growth, not magnetic fields.

Keep your camera bag zipped tight. The coastal wind blows that fine red iron dust everywhere, and it is notoriously difficult to clean out of lens rings.

Photographically, use a drone if you can get a permit. The aerial view showing the red plateau dropping off into the crashing blue waves looks like a different planet.

Also watch out for sea turtles! The beaches directly below the red cliffs are nesting grounds. If you stay past sunset, you might spot them coming ashore.

Regardless of the magnetic myths, walking barefoot earthing on the natural terrain is a recognized wellness practice that helps reduce inflammation. It is a wonderfully desolate place for a quiet meditation walk.
