The right-hander wrapping around Coconut Tree Hill needs a solid south-southwest swell of 4 to 6 feet with a period above 13 seconds. It breaks over a sharp volcanic rock shelf studded with black sea urchin pockets. Surfing it at dead low tide is hazardous because the wave drains into ankle-deep table rock; mid to incoming high tide provides sufficient water clearance over the dry reef shelf. The safe paddle-out keyhole is located 50 meters north of the headland through a narrow rip channel.
Strong ocean sweep pushes surfers toward the fishing boat moorings at Mirissa Harbour during large swells; kick out before the closeout inside section.
Green sea turtles graze along the headland kelp beds; keep your line of sight open to avoid board strikes in cloudy whitewash.
Tourist crowds on the headland summit generate heavy background distractions; morning sessions between 6:15 AM and 7:45 AM provide the cleanest lineups.
