I want to shoot surfers from the water at The Rock in Kabalana. Is the rip current too strong to swim out with a heavy DSLR water housing.

The Rock is a heavy A-frame reef break. The paddle out channel is on the left, but the rip current can get vicious, especially on a dropping tide. With a heavy DSLR housing and swim fins, it is exhausting. You must be an incredibly strong ocean swimmer. Watch out for the shallow reef on the inside; getting swept over it with expensive gear is a disaster.

If you can handle Pipe, you can handle The Rock. Just time your kick-outs carefully over the shallow coral heads.

If you have not shot heavy reef breaks before, practice at the beach break (Kabalana Beach) right next to it first.

Also, watch out for the local chargers. They take off deep and fast, and if you are sitting in the impact zone with a camera, you will get run over.

I have shot pipeline before, just wondering specifically about the Sri Lankan currents.

Make sure to wear a helmet if you are shooting from the impact zone.
