We want to drive our rented tuk tuk to the Ritigala forest monastery ruins. Is the access road paved, or is it a muddy jungle track.

The turn-off from the main Habarana highway is paved for a bit, but the last few kilometers into the strict nature reserve leading to the Ritigala ruins become a very bumpy, rutted dirt road. In the dry season, a rental tuk-tuk can handle it if you drive slowly (15 km/h). If it has rained heavily the day before, do not attempt it; the mud is thick red clay and you will get stuck.

Watch out for wild elephants on that access road at dusk. It is a heavily forested area.
