I am planning a historical pilgrimage to Nainativu Island to see both the Nagadeepa Buddhist Viharaya and the Nainativu Hindu Temple. Is the local wooden ferry safe, and how long does it take to cross the sea from Kurikadduwan.

The ferry from the Kurikadduwan (KKD) jetty takes about 15 to 20 minutes depending on the wind. It is a very raw, authentic local experience. The wooden boats are often packed with pilgrims, but life jackets are provided and strictly enforced by the Navy. It is completely safe, just expect it to be loud and crowded.

It is an incredible place where you see Buddhist and Hindu pilgrims traveling together to worship on the same small island. According to historical chronicles, the Buddha visited this exact island to settle a dispute between two Naga kings.
