Tampita Vihara (elevated temples on stone pillars) were designed to solve two main challenges: subterranean damp and termite destruction. In the wet Kandyan interior, ground moisture rapidly rotted timber-framed mud plaster walls. By mounting the entire wooden shrine onto monolithic stone stilts resting on dressed granite slabs, builders eliminated capillary water rise and created a physical air gap that termites could not bridge without building visible earthen tubes that monks could spot and destroy.
