Tangalle Goyambokka Beach reef keyhole: shorebreak undertow and safe swimming channels?

Goyambokka Beach near Tangalle is a sheltered double-cove flanked by high granite headlands. Submerged sandstone and dead coral reef ledges extend outward from both headlands, absorbing the brunt of open-ocean southern groundswells. Wave energy dissipates across these outer shelves, creating a relatively calm, turquoise central swimming basin over soft sand. However, water trapped in the bay escapes seaward through a deep natural reef channel along the western rocky point, generating a powerful outgoing rip current; swimmers should remain in the central sandy shallows and avoid swimming near the western rocks.
