Hummanaya at Kudawella (near Tangalle) is the only natural blowhole in Sri Lanka and the second largest in the world. It is a marine geological feature formed where ocean waves have carved a narrow subterranean sea cave through a fractured gneiss cliff leading to a vertical blowhole chimney (aperture roughly 1 meter wide). When deep southern ocean swells rush into the submerged sea cave, water and air are compressed under massive hydraulic pressure. As trapped air forces water upward through the narrow fissure, a roaring sound ("Hoo-man-na") precedes a vertical geyser plume shooting up to 25 to 30 meters.
