Thinking of going to a temple festival around Jaffna. News said a lot of people needed treatment after bright festival lamps. Are those high-powered lamps actually a risk for visitors, or only if you stare straight into them.

Police seized high-powered lamps after scores of eye injuries at a Jaffna temple festival. Do not look into the beams and keep kids facing away from the brightest banks.

Stand further back than the photo crowd. The danger is the intense lamps, not the temple itself - sunglasses help more than you think at night.

If organisers are still using seized-style lamps, skip the front row. You can enjoy the music and crowd from a safer distance.
