The inner relic shrine (Vadahitina Maligawa) opens to public view during the three daily ritual Thevava services: 5:30 AM to 7:00 AM (morning service), 9:30 AM to 11:00 AM (midday rice offering), and 6:30 PM to 8:00 PM (evening pooja). Pilgrims file along the upper gallery to view the outermost nested golden stupa-shaped casket (Karanduwa) encrusted with rubies and diamonds. Devotees may place offerings of fresh white lotus blossoms, jasmine, or bottled herbal oil on the silver tables outside the threshold.
Line up at the upper staircase 45 minutes prior to the opening bell; queues stretch through the lower drumming courtyard on Poya holidays.
White modest attire covering shoulders and ankles is strictly required; leather belts and hats must be removed before entering the inner corridor.
Flash photography and camera tripods are prohibited inside the upper sanctum gallery to prevent crowd bottlenecks.
