The "Gathering" at Minneriya National Park is the largest seasonal congregation of Asian elephants (Elephas maximus) in the world, with up to 300 individuals assembling simultaneously. It occurs during the dry season (July to October). As the ancient 3rd-century Minneriya reservoir water recedes, it exposes thousands of hectares of lush, nutrient-dense green grasses on the fertile lake bed. Elephant herds from Matale, Polonnaruwa, and Trincomalee migrate to feed, socialize, and mate along the water margins.

Book an afternoon safari (2:30 PM to 6:00 PM); elephants remain sheltered inside dense scrub forest during midday heat, emerging onto open grasslands around 3:30 PM.

If water levels in Minneriya rise unseasonably, herds move to adjacent Kaudulla National Park or Hurulu Eco Park; confirm current herd locations with Habarana safari drivers.

Ensure your driver obeys DWC park regulations: keeping a 20-meter distance, remaining on tracks, and cutting engines when herds cross vehicle lines.

Carry binoculars to observe herd social interactions, including newborn calves nursing and adolescent bulls sparring along the water edge.
