Traditional Chena (swidden slash-and-burn) was ecologically sustainable only when practiced with long 15 to 20-year fallow periods. Farmers cleared secondary scrub jungle, leaving large root crowns and mother seed trees intact. After one to two seasons of cultivating mixed rain-fed crops (finger millet, cowpeas, mustard, and pumpkins), the plot was abandoned. Over fifteen years, pioneer leguminous scrub (like Crotalaria and Cassia) regenerates into dense forest, fixing atmospheric nitrogen, replenishing subsoil organic carbon, and restoring soil structure without chemical fertilizer inputs.
