The traditional Sri Lankan rotary quern (Kurakkan Gala) is an ancient stone milling tool engineered specifically for grinding tiny, tough seeds of finger millet (Kurakkan). It comprises two circular dressed granite slabs: a stationary lower stone with a central upright iron pivot (Kula) and a rotating upper stone with an offset wooden handle (Edanda). Stonemasons chisel radial grooves (teeth / Keta) into both matching faces using hardened steel points. As the upper stone rotates at 40-50 RPM, grain fed into the central eye is sheared progressively outward between the grooves, pulverizing the hard fibrous seed coat into flour without frictional overheating.

The grooves must be re-dressed (picked) with a pointed cold chisel every six months; worn smooth stones crush grain into coarse flakes rather than fine flour.
