Restoring historical Kandyan and coastal temple wall plasters (such as at Degaldoruwa or Kataluwa) requires authentic organic lime mortar. Conservators slake calcium-rich marine sea-shells in water pits for a minimum of two months to produce a smooth, non-caustic lime putty. This is blended with washed river sand and fine kaolin clay in a 1:2 ratio. To enhance structural elasticity and workability, the mix is tempered with a thick organic decoction made by boiling ripe Bael fruit (Aegle marmelos / Beli) and tamarind seeds with jaggery water. The natural polysaccharides act as organic plasticizers and retarding agents, allowing smooth application.
