I want to watch skilled mask carvers at work. Any authentic workshops or demonstrations?

Ambalangoda and surrounding areas are the traditional center for mask making. Some artisans still have workshops where you can watch the carving and painting process. These are working spaces rather than tourist shows, so going with a local introduction or through a cultural center is more appropriate than just walking in. Some places offer short demonstrations or allow observation with permission. The craft is intricate and time-consuming — watching even for a short time gives appreciation for the skill involved.

The best experiences are usually low-key and respectful. Some carvers are happy to explain their work if approached properly.
