Artisanal batik studios in Mahawewa and Galle rely on calibrated wax resist formulas. The master formula combines 60% industrial paraffin wax (which provides brittleness necessary for controlled cracking), 30% natural unrefined beeswax (which provides tackiness and adhesion to cotton fibers), and 10% microcrystalline resin or crushed dammar (Dummala) to raise melting point. Molten wax is applied with copper-spouted pens (Tjanting) at 110°C to 120°C. To produce signature spiderweb crackle patterns, the waxed fabric is chilled in cold water and crumpled by hand before immersion in cold-water reactive dye vats.
