Traditional Warichchi (wattle and daub) structures excel at passive thermal regulation in tropical climates. The skeleton is woven from rot-resistant jungle timbers and split bamboo, which is then packed with a dense paste of clayey subsoil, sand, chopped straw, and termite-mound earth (which is naturally rich in organic resins that resist water). This high-density earthen wall acts as a thermal mass, absorbing external daytime heat and releasing it outward during cool nighttime drops. Paired with a high-pitched thatch roof woven from coconut cadjan (which allows hot air to vent through the ridge line), interior temperatures remain noticeably cooler than uninsulated concrete block houses.
