It's best to go with a local who can introduce you respectfully rather than just walking in. Some cultural centers and hotels can arrange visits. The quality varies — look for traditional motifs and techniques rather than mass-produced items. Buying directly from the maker supports the craft better than souvenir shops.
Some carvers are happy to demonstrate if you show genuine interest and respect. It's a dying art in some ways, so supporting the remaining practitioners matters.
