Many small street places do not have English menus. How do we know what to order.

The easiest trick is to use the Google Translate app camera feature. You simply point your phone at the menu and it translates the Sinhala script into English instantly on your screen. However in many tiny rural cafes there is no written menu at all. You just walk up to the glass cabinet where the food is displayed point directly at the curries that look good to you and hold up your fingers to indicate how many portions you want. It is universally understood and highly authentic.
