Traveling with a 4 year old and 7 year old in Sri Lanka realistic or too much

Very realistic, and Sri Lankans adore children, you will be welcomed everywhere. Practical tips from hosting families: hire a private driver-guide instead of buses and trains for long legs, the kids can nap and you can stop on demand. Pick a slower route: Negombo to Sigiriya (one big sight + the rock garden, climbable for a 7yr-old) to Kandy (Temple of the Tooth, short visits) to a beach base for several nights (Bentota, Unawatuna or Mirissa bay). Skip Adams Peak and long jungle hikes at this age. Food: ask for "no chili" and rice with dhal, eggs, plain hoppers, fresh fruit and yogurt; bland is easy. Bring kids paracetamol/ibuprofen, oral rehydration salts, and good mosquito repellent. Most mid-range guesthouses do family rooms and high chairs on request.
Stilt-fishermen photo ops, turtle hatcheries and the Madu River boat ride are easy half-day fun. The hill-country train as a short hop is a hit too, not the whole 7 hours.
For wildlife with kids, Udawalawe beats Yala: shorter game drives, much higher chance of seeing elephants up close, and the Elephant Transit Home next door does feeding times that kids love.
Booking a private driver and basing several nights at the beach. Thank you all, feeling much more confident.
On safety: keep a close eye near stray dogs, monkeys at Sigiriya/Dambulla (they snatch food and bags), and at unprotected beaches as covered in the rip-current thread. Booster seats are rare; bring one if you need it.
