Triangle driver keeps adding optional temple stops with tip boxes — refuse the next one or rewrite the day?
WhatsApp itinerary was Sigiriya, cave temple, hotel. Today we already did two unplanned shrines where someone pointed at a tip box and waited. Driver says it is normal respect. We are temple-tired and tipping-confused. Can we say no to further optional stops without a sulk for the rest of the hire, or should we renegotiate the whole day plan now?

Optional stops are optional. A clear, polite line works: we are done with extra temples today — please stick to the agreed sites and the hotel. Tip boxes at shrines are for people who choose to donate; they are not a mandatory tour fee, and I will not invent an amount. Renegotiate once, kindly, before the next detour: list the remaining stops you do want. Good drivers reset; sulking is a signal you may want a different arrangement tomorrow. Keep the conversation about time and energy, not accusations. Photograph the agreed plan if it helps both of you.
Said no thank you to the third stop. Driver shrugged and we got an extra lake pause instead. Worth the one awkward minute.
Rewrote the afternoon on WhatsApp together. One cave, one viewpoint, hotel. Tip jar pressure gone.
From the site side: rushing tourists through extra shrines helps nobody. Quality over a tip-box bingo card.
