I want to take long exposure photos of the Gal Vihara statues in Polonnaruwa. Are tourists allowed to set up tripods inside the temple compounds.

For personal photography with a standard tripod, your regular entrance ticket is usually sufficient at Polonnaruwa. However, you must not block the walking paths of pilgrims making offerings. The golden rule is NEVER take a photo posing with your back to the Buddha statues. The guards will force you to delete the photos. Also, do not use flash on the statues.

If you bring massive lighting rigs or commercial gear, you need a permit from the Cultural Fund.

The sand gets blisteringly hot by 11 AM. Wear thick socks!

Yes, the sandy areas right in front of the statues are sacred. Shoes and hats must be removed.

I set up my tripod at the Vatadage and no one bothered me. Just be respectful.
