The Sri Lankan subspecies of the Asian Elephant (Elephas maximus maximus) is unique because tusks are genetically rare: fewer than 7% of adult males grow visible ivory tusks (compared to nearly 100% in African elephants), with the majority being "makhnas" (tuskless males). In Udawalawe National Park, prominent individual tuskers (such as the famous "Samanala" or "Gemunu") command high status during breeding seasons. Tuskers use their ivory weapons to assert dominance during intense sparring matches with rival bulls, securing breeding access to nursery herds congregating along the reservoir grasslands.
