The Elephant Transit Home (ETH) in Udawalawe operates under the Department of Wildlife Conservation to rehabilitate orphaned baby elephants rescued across Sri Lanka. To prevent animals from imprinting on humans and losing wild survival instincts, human contact is strictly restricted to veterinary staff. Public visitors can view feeding sessions four times daily (9:00 AM, 12:00 PM, 3:00 PM, and 6:00 PM) from an elevated gallery platform as milk-fed calves rush in from surrounding scrub forest to drink formula before returning immediately to the wild.
When calves reach approximately 4 to 5 years of age and develop independent foraging skills, they are released in herds into Udawalawe National Park.
Adopting a baby elephant through financial support programs helps cover formula milk and medical supplies managed by DWC wildlife veterinarians.
Combine a morning wildlife safari inside Udawalawe National Park with a midday feeding visit to the Transit Home located just outside park gates.
Photography from the gallery is permitted without flash to avoid startling young, sensitive calves during feeding times.
