I want to see Blue Whales in Mirissa, but I have read horrible reviews about 20 boats chasing and surrounding a single whale. How do I find an ethical, rules-compliant operator.

This is a serious problem. Ethical operators must stay at least 100 meters away, cut their engines, and NEVER cross the whales path. Look for operators that are officially WDC (Whale and Dolphin Conservation) compliant, like Raja and the Whales or Geeth. Ask them directly before booking if they adhere to international distance guidelines.

I booked with Raja based on your advice. Thank you!

If your captain starts speeding aggressively toward a blow spout, yell at him to stop. Tourist pressure is the only thing that changes their behavior.

Avoid the cheapest tickets sold on the beach. Those are the rogue boats that chase the animals.
