Vas Poya (July full moon) begins the 3-month monastic rainy-season retreat. Monks stay in one monastery, focus on meditation and teaching. Impact on tourists: temples somewhat quieter during monk-side but public services continue. Public gets meritorious opportunities to bring meals to monks.

Best experience: attend an evening Bana (Dhamma teaching) at a major temple during Vas Poya — held nightly at Gangaramaya, various Colombo and Kandy temples. Free, welcoming. Wear white/subdued clothing, remove shoes.
