Vessagiriya is absolutely worth a visit and makes a phenomenal addition to any cycling tour of Anuradhapura. It is located just a short ride south of the main complex. The site is incredibly unique, featuring massive boulder formations where ancient monks carved out secluded meditation caves.

It provides a deeply peaceful, serene atmosphere completely free of the massive pilgrim crowds found at the main stupas like Ruwanwelisaya. Exploring the rocky paths and reading the ancient inscriptions etched above the caves is a fascinating historical experience.
