I read about the incredible ancient irrigation systems. Are there specific tanks worth visiting as a tourist?

Yes, they're impressive engineering feats from over 2000 years ago. Good ones to visit: Tissa Wewa and Yodha Wewa near Tissamaharama (near Yala), Parakrama Samudra in Polonnaruwa, and the many tanks around Sigiriya and Dambulla. You can combine them with wildlife (birds, elephants often come to drink) and ancient sites. Many are still in use today. A knowledgeable driver or guide can show you the impressive bunds and spillways.

We stopped at a couple near Sigiriya. Interesting history and great for birdwatching. Not as 'famous' as the rock fortresses but very peaceful.
